For an undisclosed fee, popular online discussion network Reddit is acquiring machine learning (ML) platform Spell. Spell, founded by Serkan Piantino, a former Facebook developer, provides a cloud computing solution that allows anyone to execute resource-intensive machine learning experiments without high-end hardware.

In a statement, Reddit Chief Product Officer Pali Bhat stated, “Serkan and his team are a great fit and we look forward to seeing how their capabilities and talent help us make Reddit simpler, richer, and more relevant.” During the transaction, Spell would block new commercial customers, according to TechCrunch.

Some members of the team will join Reddit to work on machine learning initiatives such as how Reddit customises ad placements and keeps its communities safe. According to its website, Spell is “the greatest potential platform for anyone wishing to construct powerful, trustworthy, and safe software using Machine Learning and AI.”

With a $1 million investment, Reddit recently started its Community Funds initiative. The firm claimed it has been experimenting with ‘Community Funds,’ which aim to provide financial support to Reddit community ideas and passions.

“Through our experiment, we funded 13 projects that communities nominated. Projects have included a comics tournament, a community-designed musical artist billboard in Times Square, and a digital conference for history buffs,” in a blog post, the business stated. From June, the corporation said it would allow communities to submit project, event, and contest ideas.

For the first time, Reddit has included the ability to search comments in order to improve search results for its 50 million daily users.
