According to a media report, Shanghai, the largest city in China, has mandated that the majority of its schools to conduct classes online as COVID-19 cases soar. According to Shanghai’s education bureau, nurseries and childcare facilities will also close as of Monday, the BBC reported.
Chinese authorities loosened restrictions earlier this month in response to a wave of protests against China’s zero-Covid strategy. However, the BBC reported that the relaxation of strict lockdown measures has increased worries about the spread of Covid in China.
Earlier, the U.S.-based Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) has predicted that China’s tight COVID-19 restrictions could result in an explosion of cases and over a million deaths through 2023 after being abruptly lifted in response to unprecedented protests under the Xi Jinping regime.
