Thailand King and Queen test positive for COVID-19
The king and queen of Thailand have tested positive for Covid-19, though they have so far only experienced minor symptoms, the royal palace announced on Saturday. King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 70, and Queen Suthida, 44, were given treatment recommendations by doctors and asked to take a break from their duties for a while, according to a statement from the Royal Household Bureau.
According to the statement, their symptoms are “very mild.” The couple went to see Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol earlier on Friday and Thursday. She was being treated at Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok after going into cardiac arrest on Wednesday.
The Department of Disease Control reports that after Thailand loosened restrictions that had been in place since 2020, the number of infections spread by the dominant omicron subvariants has increased in Bangkok and other popular tourist locations.
