Up to 45% more jobs are available in Canada starting in April 2021: Report

According to the most recent report from Statistics Canada, employers in Canada were actively looking to fill approximately 1 million job openings at the beginning of April, up 2.4% from the previous months and about 46% from April 2021, despite the global economic crisis and inflation.

The report claims that the rise in April was caused by seasonal factors, as more jobs become available in the spring and summer.

The number of open positions in Alberta and Ontario hit a record high in April, with an average of 1.1 unemployed people per open position, down from 1.2 in March and 2.4 from a year earlier. According to Statistics Canada, there were over four unemployed workers for every open position in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The number of job openings in the construction industry hit a new high of 89,900 in April, up 5.4% from March and nearly 46% from April of previous year.

In addition, job openings in real estate, banking and insurance, entertainment and recreation, transportation and warehousing, professional, scientific, and technical services all hit a new high.

The number of open positions in the health care and social support sector decreased by 15%, from 147,500 in March to 1,25,200 today.

The data also shows that, in all provinces, employment levels have either reached or surpassed those from before the COVID-19 outbreak.

For the first time, employment in the educational services sector increased in April compared to March by 9,700, surpassing the pre-COVID 19 level from February 2020. While employment in the food and lodging sectors has increased by more than 10% since February.

The job vacancy figures for May 2022 are expected to be announced by Statistics Canada on July 28. The results of the second quarter of 2022’s salary survey will be made public on September 20.
