In the midst of an ongoing political turbulence in the United Kingdom, former Chancellor Rishi Sunak is at the tip of reaching the threshold of receiving supports from over 100 MP’s. According to a media report on Saturday, the requirement for entering the contest to become the next prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party was to receive the support of 100 MPs. As per a BBC report Sunak at present, has managed to receive 93 endorsements from Conservative MPs.
On the other hand, Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is expected to arrive in London on Saturday from a vacation in the Caribbean, is in second place with 44 endorsements.
Sunak and Johnson are yet to officially announce their candidature in the campaign to succeed Liz Truss, who resigned as prime minister on Thursday after serving for just 45 days, the shortest tenure ever for a British premier. Sunak has received support from a number of high-ranking colleagues, including former Health Secretary Sajid Javid, Security Minister Tom Tugendhat, and former Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Javid in an interview to the BBC said that “Rishi Sunak is the ideal candidate to lead our party and move the country ahead because it is abundantly visible that he has what it takes to meet the difficulties.” Another supporter, Tobias Ellwood, observed that he was the 100th MP to endorse Sunak, saying: “Time for centrist, stable, fiscally responsible government offering credible domestic & international leadership.”
A Johnson supporter James Duddridge, Minister of Trade in an interview to the BBC asserted that the former Prime Minister had “momentum and support”. “Johnson is ready for it and is coming back to the UK.”
On the other hand, Penny Mordaunt the current leader of ‘House of Commons’ who has 21 supporters so far and has also managed to officially enter the PM race, she claimed that she has been encouraged by Favour from colleagues who want a fresh start, a united party and leadership in the national interest. Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson have not officially launched their campaigns yet.
