S Jaishankar’s big announcement on Passport Seva Divas, India to get e-passports


Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar made an announcement on the account of Passport Seva Divas that Indians will get upgraded e-passports as an implementation of phase 2 of the Passport Seva Programme (PSP-Version 2.0).

Mr Jaishankar addressed the passport issuing authorities and India and abroad to revise a pledge to provide passports to the people in a reliable, timely and effective manner which holds utmost transparency in the working of the government.

He even stated that the nation will soon be venturing into issuing new and updated e-passports to the masses as a part of the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) Version 2.0. The minister added further by saying, “Ease of Living’ for citizens, these initiatives will usher in a new paradigm of ‘EASE”: E: Enhanced passport services to citizens, using a digital eco-system A: Artificial Intelligence-powered service delivery S: Smoother overseas travel using chip-enabled e-passports E: Enhanced data security,” as quoted by NDTV News.


The Passport Seva Programme has contributed to a wider range of achieving the government’s goal towards ‘Digital India’ and offering it milestones such as the mPassport Seva Mobile App, mPassport Police App and coherence of PSP with DigiLocker.  Also, in 2014, there were only 77 Passport Seva Kendras over all the country, but now the number has reached 523 today. It implies how much the authorities have strived for attaining the highest standards in the issuing of passports.
