Ranil Wickremesinghe sworn in as new PM of Sri Lanka

On Thursday, May 12, Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the new prime minister of Sri Lanka amid economic & political crisis. Ranil has been a lawmaker for a long time in the island nation. This can be a sign of reviving the stability in the country.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa submitted his resignation to the president on Monday after protests erupted across the country. It was the demand of the protestors that PM Rajapaksa should resign from his chair. Ranil Wickremesinghe took oath at a ceremony in the presence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The protestors have further demanded resignation from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who is the younger brother of former PM Mahinda. The country is facing its worst economic crisis since its formation in 1948. Several countries are offering aid to Sri Lanka. Neighbouring country India has supplied tonnes of wheat, oil & medicines to the island nation.
