Imposter Syndrome

About 70% of the world’s population has experienced impostor syndrome. This feeling that you have achieved success not because of talent and perseverance, but because you just got lucky. The phenomenon itself was first described in 1978 by American researchers Pauline Klans and Suzanne Imes in the article “The Imposter Phenomenon Among Successful Women.”

Dunning-Kruger Effect

Closely related to impostor syndrome is another psychological phenomenon, the Dunning-Kruger effect, which psychologists described in 1999. It lies in the fact that incompetent people overestimate their abilities, while qualified people, on the contrary, underestimate them. At the same time, high-class professionals mistakenly believe that tasks that are easy for them are also easy for others.

Best of all, the Dunning-Kruger effect demonstrates a person’s delusion about the level of their own competence. It is very difficult to soberly assess your professional level. You run the risk of going to extremes.

It’s a good idea to ask mentors for feedback, enter competitions, go for internships and jobs that you’re really interested in, and, of course, constantly learn new things.

Catastrophic Thinking

Fear of making a mistake is an indicator that you are facing challenges, such as an unexpected and challenging task. This fear is natural if you just got a job in a company or moved to a new position. In general, prudence is a valuable quality, as long as it does not turn into paralyzing fear and foreboding of a catastrophe.
