The Bharatiya Janata Party responded angrily to a statement made by Congress leader Ajoy Kumar that NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu represents a “very terrible mindset of India” and should not be considered a “symbol of Adivasi” (BJP).

The Congress politician claimed in a statement to ANI on Tuesday that the situation for the Scheduled Castes had gotten “worse.”

For the July 18 presidential elections, Congress-led opposition parties have put former union minister Yashwant Sinha up against Ms. Murmu.

“It’s not about Droupadi Murmu. Yashwant Sinha is also a good candidate and Murmu is also a decent person. But she represents a very evil philosophy of India. We should not make her a symbol of ‘Adivasi’. We have President Ram Nath Kovind, Hathras happened. Has he said a word? The condition of Scheduled Castes has become worse,” Mr Kumar said.

Droupadi Murmu will be India’s second female president and the nation’s first tribal leader if she is elected. She was Jharkhand’s first female governor (from 2015 to 2021). Despite difficult conditions, Ms. Murmu finished her education despite being born into a low-income tribal family in a village of Odisha’s rural Mayurbhanj region.

The Congress leader urged other like-minded parties to support the opposition candidate, Yashwant Sinha, in what he called a “battle for the spirit of the nation.”

“Creating symbols and fooling the people of India is what the Modi government is all about. This is a fight for the soul of the nation and all like-minded parties should vote for Yashwant Sinha,” he said.

In addition to serving as the BJP district chairman of Mayurbhanj (West) in 2010 and 2013, Droupadi Murmu was a member of the national executive of the BJP’s ST Morcha from 2013 to 2015. She presided over the BJP’s ST Morcha in Odisha from 2006 to 2009. From 2002 to 2009, she served on the BJP ST Morcha’s national executive.

Responding to Mr. Kumar, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala claimed that Ms. Murmu had been humiliated by the Congress.
