Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which he leads, stormed back into power in the 2019 general elections. The party increased its 2014 total of 282 seats to 303 in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament.

With 53 seats, Congress and its allies outperformed their 2014 performance when they only managed to win 44 seats. Several leaders also made an effort to bring the Opposition together in opposition to the BJP, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

After a contest between him and his rival Shashi Tharoor, who received slightly more than 1,000 votes, Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, was chosen as the party’s leader.
