Who is Draupadi Murmu? lets take a brief look at her life

Let’s briefly look into the BJP’s select candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in July 2022.

Draupadi Murmu is an Indian politician and a member of the BJP. She has been chosen from 20 potential candidates that were brainstormed at the BJP parliamentary board meeting as a candidate for the race to secure the top job in the Indian government – President’s post.

Draupadi Murmu will be seen competing against Yashwant Sinha, the opposition’s chosen one for the top post in July’s presidential elections which will commence on July 18th and the counting of votes will begin on 21st July 2022. If luck favors, Murmu will be the first tribal woman to secure this top spot.

This article will briefly touch upon her life and her careful maneuvers to reach this top spot.

Born in 1958 on the 20th of June, Murmu comes from a tribal community (scheduled tribe) in a small village in Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. Her father and her paternal grandfather served as village heads in the then Panchayati Raj system.

Murmu from a very early age wanted to help people and always cared for her community people. She started her career as a teacher and always kept the dignity and morale of her tribe high and made them believe that anything can be achieved if you put in the extra effort and tread along patiently.

Murmu studied Art at the Rama Devi Woman’s College – Bhubaneshwar and it’s quite interesting how time flew, she gave 2 decades of her time to politics and diligently doing social service.

Her portfolio is quite diverse in 2015 she served as Jharkhand’s first female and ninth governor. She held a ministerial post in Naveen Patnaik’s cabinet when BJD was the ruling party in the state and several diverse ministerial portfolios like commerce, transport, animal husbandry, and fisheries in the government of Odisha. Odisha’s legislative assembly also awarded Murmu with the Nilkantha Award as the best MLA.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted about Murmu’s candidature.

Interestingly this is not the first time Murmu has shown interest in the top spot. In the 2017 presidential elections, Murmu was a strong contender, however, Ram Nath Kovind backed the top spot back then.

Personally, Draupadi Murmu had to go through hell and back when she lost her spouse Shyam Charan Murmu and both her sons. She has a daughter, Itishree Murmu who is married to a Rugby player and the couple has a daughter too.

Draupadi Murmu is now preparing for the top spot and come July 2022 the world will see who is India’s next President.
