After five decades of the Bangladesh liberation war, the event has again come to the limelight on October 15th, with a couple of United States congressmen putting forth a proposed resolution in the house of representatives requesting US President Joe Biden to consider recognizing the iniquities committed by the armed forces of Pakistan during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.
US Congressman Steve Chabot (Republican), in cooperation with Congressman of Indian origin Ro Khanna (Democrat), urged Biden to officially acknowledge the 1971 genocide as crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide.
The resolution put forward is an eight-page long and titled- ‘Recognizing the Bangladesh Genocide of 1971’ and specifically focuses on the active role played by the Pakistan army along with all its functionating associated units in the active involvement of mass rape and genocide committed in 1971.

Ro Khanna, a US congressman of Indian origin in a tweet said, “Proud to join Rep Steve Chabot in introducing the first resolution commemorating the 1971 Bengalis and Hindus were killed or displaced in one of the most forgotten genocides of our time.”
On the other hand, Khanna’s counterpart Chabot a Republican Party member said in a tweet that “We must not let the years erase the memory of the millions who were massacred. recognizing the genocide strengthens the historical record, educates our fellow American’s, and lets would-be perpetrators known such crimes will not be tolerated or forgotten.”
While discussing US foreign policy, at a recent private Democratic party fundraiser in California, US President Joe Biden also cited Pakistan as one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
The resolution’s logical consequence will only become clear over time, and if the US government is committed, it may even go so far as to penalize Pakistan. It is unquestionably the finest move made in the direction of Dhaka at this time.
