About 180 North Korean warplanes were reportedly spotted flying across the military border on Friday for four hours, prompting the South Korean airforce to scramble fighter jets.

According to a statement from the South Korean military, the North Korean aircraft crossed the so-called tactical measure line, which was established up to 20 km north of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL).

In response, 80 aircraft, including F-35A stealth fighters, were dispatched by South Korea. The Vigilant Storm air exercises with the United States resumed with over 240 aircraft present, according to the military.

Similar manoeuvres were performed by a flight of ten North Korean warplanes last month, causing South Korea to scramble its air defences.c

The manoeuvres followed North Korea’s night time artillery barrage of more than 80 rounds and Thursday’s maritime launches of several missiles, perhaps including a failed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The rockets prompted the US and South Korea to prolong air exercises, which infuriated Pyongyang.
