According to preliminary information, it is doubtful that a missile fired from Russia caused the explosion in a village in eastern Poland close to the Ukrainian border, said US President Joe Biden on Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, Poland reported Russian missiles entering Polish territory and hitting a rural settlement and killing two individuals.

The debris of the missile shows that the projectile landed in Poland and belonged to the S300 air defence system. S300 is a Soviet-era air defence system, a predecessor of the S400 which India has ordered. Both Russia and Ukraine have deployed this system to counter aerial threats.

Biden says missile not likely Russian

According to preliminary information, it is doubtful that a missile fired from Russia caused the explosion in a village in eastern Poland close to the Ukrainian border, said US President Joe Biden on Wednesday. Biden was addressing following an urgent gathering of world leaders in Bali for the G20 summit.

When asked about the possibility of a Russian missile strike in Poland, Biden said, “There is preliminary information that contests that. I don’t want to say that until we completely investigate it but it is unlikely in the lines of the trajectory that it was fired from Russia but we’ll see.”

Asked whether it was too early to say that the missile was fired from Russia, Biden said: “There is preliminary information that contests that. I don’t want to say that until we completely investigate it but it is unlikely in the lines of the trajectory that it was fired from Russia but we’ll see.”

He emphasised that the US and NATO members would conduct thorough investigations before taking any action.

“We agreed to support Poland’s investigation into the explosion in rural Poland, near the Ukrainian border, and they’re going to make sure we figure out exactly what happened,” Biden said.

“And then we’re going to collectively determine our next step as we investigate and proceed. There was total unanimity among folks at the table.”
