Petroleum ministry clarifies no decision has been taken regarding banning of diesel-driven vehicles

On Tuesday, it was clarified by the petroleum ministry that the government has not yet taken any decision on accepting the Energy Transition Advisory Committee (ETAC) report’s recommendation that called for ban in the particular vehicles in big cities by 2027.

In the series of tweet, the ministry stated that the suggestions by ETAC affects more than just one ministries and also include range of stakeholders including States. Consultations with various stakeholders on the #report are yet to be initiated,” read the tweet by the ministry.
The recommendations by ETAC comes in view of shifting to Low Carbon Energy. The petroleum ministry’s advisory committee has suggested a big shift to electrification in the mobility and policy initiatives to reduce the use of fossil fuels.
The report by the committee recommended the ministry to place a ban on all the diesel-driven four wheelers in all million-plus cities and towns with high population in coming five years i.e. by 2027. Further ahead, it was also recommended that only electric city delivery vehicles should be registered from 2024, which will lead to around the electric vehicles constituting to 75% to complete city delivery vehicles. Another highlight from the report was increase in share of railways rise to 50% in national freight in 15 years.
