Nick Kygrious of Australia defeated Daniil Medvedev of Russia to clinch a place in the quarterfinals at the US Open. Kyrgious won 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 ,6-2. However, one of the points scored in the match would stay long in the memory of viewers. It came after both players had won a set apiece and Kyrios had the chance to go 2-0 with a break point in the third set. In that particular rally Mevedev lobbed the ball in the air in response to a powerful short from Nick, and it was clearly landing outside. However, Nick who is always up for doing the unusual ran to the ball, met it in the full and smashed it diagonally, thus winning the point. It was ruled as a foul by umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore and a point for Medvedev, who went on to hold the serve in the game. This was because Nick had crossed the net to hit the ball. He later said “I am going to look like an idiot… I thought it was legal.” Medvedev later praised his game saying “Nick [Kyrgios] today played at level of Novak [Djokovic] and Rafa [Nadal]”.
