Manipur bus accident: PM Modi assures to pay ₹2 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of each deceased

On Wednesday, December 21, 2022, a bus carrying school students on a study tour was involved in an accident in Manipur’s Noney district. This accident is said to have killed several students and injured many more. The accident occurred on the Bisnupur-Khoupum (Old Cachar road) in the Noney district.

Two buses were transporting students from Thambalnu Higher Secondary School, Yairipok in Manipur’s Imphal East district on a study tour. The buses were on their way to Khoupum when the unfortunate incident occurred. According to reports, 15 to 20 students may have died as a result of this incident. East Mojo News confirmed the deaths of eight students and stated that the actual number could be much higher.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the deaths of students in a school bus accident in Manipur’s Noney district on Wednesday and announced ex-gratia payments of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of each deceased.

“Anguished by the loss of lives in Manipur’s Noney district due to a tragic bus accident. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover soon,” Modi was quoted as saying in a tweet by his office.  The Manipur government is providing all possible assistance to those affected, he said.

“An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund) would be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the bus accident. The injured would be given Rs 50,000,” the prime minister said.
