Lt General Anil Chauhan (retd) appointed CDS
Since General Bipin Rawat’s passing in a helicopter accident on December 8 of last year, the position of CDS has remained vacant.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on Wednesday that the Government had chosen to name Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan (retired) as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
Since General Bipin Rawat’s passing in a helicopter accident on December 8 of last year, the position of CDS has remained vacant.
According to a statement from the MoD, Lt. Gen. Chauhan will serve as Secretary to the Department of Military Affairs of the Government of India beginning on the day he takes command and continuing until further instructions.

Lt Gen Chauhan had held a number of commands, staff, and instrumental positions throughout the course of his nearly 40-year career and had a wealth of knowledge in counterinsurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and Northeast India.
In 1981, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan received his commission into the Indian Army’s 11 Gorkha Rifles. He graduated from both the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun and the National Defense Academy in Khadakwasla.
