In terms of security and foreign policy, the Pakistan Army, which has dominated the nation for more than 50 of its 75 years, has a sizable amount of influence.

The summary for the COAS and CJCSC appointments was received by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), according to an announcement made on Wednesday. Six distinguished lieutenant generals have been nominated for the positions by the Army.

Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Commander of the 10 Corps, Lt General Azhar Abbas, Chief of the General Staff, Lt General Nauman Mehmood, President of the National Defense University, Lt General Faiz Hamid, Commander of the Bahawalpur Corps, and Lt General Mohammad Amir, Commander of the Gujranwala Corps, were the other candidates for the position of Army Chief of Staff.

In September 2018, Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir received a promotion to two-star general. According to a story in Dawn, he joined the military through the Officers Training School programme in Mangla and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment.

As a brigadier under the departing army leader, Lt. Gen. Munir, a close ally of General Bajwa, oversaw troops in the Force Command Northern Areas. At the time, Bajwa was Commander X Corps.

Lt. Gen. Munir was chosen to serve as Military Intelligence’s director general in 2017. In October of the following year, he was appointed Inter-Services Intelligence Chief.

However, under the regime of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, his tenure as head of the ISI was brief. Lt. Gen. Faiz Hamid took over in just eight months.

Before being transferred to the General Headquarters to serve as the quartermaster general, Lt Gen Munir was stationed as the commander of the Gujranwala Corps for two years.
