Indian government plans to take action against Google after an antitrust watchdog last year found the tech giant to have abused its market position to be indulged in anti-competitive practices, as shared by an IT minister to Reuters.

Alphabet Inc’s Google was fined $275 million by India’s antitrust body in two cases, which involved abusing its dominant position in the Android operating system market, and pushing developers to use its in-app payment system.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the federal deputy minister for Information Technology, shared with Reuters that the findings are serious and are cause of deep concern to India’s federal government, which will take its own action against Google. The minister added that the ministry has decided to take the action and it will be seen coming in the next few weeks. Speaking of the findings, he added that it is not something which can be pushed under the carpet.

However, he had declined to comment over what type of policy or regulatory action is the government planning to take against Google.

Chandrasekhar, who is one of the elite officials in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office, said that the issue is worrisome, not only for them, but for the whole ecosystem of India’s digitalisation.
