The Union Home Ministry has suspended senior IPS officer and former Tihar Prisons Director General Sandeep Goel for alleged dereliction of duty, officials said on Thursday.

Sandeep Goel, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1989 batch, was removed as head of Delhi’s Tihar Prisons last month and assigned to the Delhi Police headquarters.

An inquiry panel convened by Delhi L-G VK Saxena discovered that AAP leader Satyendar Jain was given “special services” while imprisoned at Tihar. Goel allegedly conspired with Jain, and the inquiry panel recommended that he face departmental charges.

Furthermore, Goel was transferred from Tihar Jail just days after jailed conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar alleged extortion of Rs 10 crore for prison protection.

Satyendar Jain “extorted” Rs 10 crore from Chandrashekhar in 2019 to ensure his safety in prison, according to Chandrashekhar’s letter to Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena. The conman claimed Jain asked him to pay Rs 1.50 crore to Goel, whom he described as a loyal associate. According to PTI, Jain received Rs 10 crore and Goel received Rs 12.50 crore.
