EX-Gujarat CM’s son Mahendrasinh Vaghela joins congress

Earlier in the day, Mahendrasinh Vaghela, the son of former Gujarat chief minister Shanker Sinh Vaghela, formally joined the Congress.

Earlier in the day, Mahendrasinh Vaghela, the son of former Gujarat chief minister Shanker Sinh Vaghela, formally joined the Congress.  Mahendrasinh Vaghela, who was at the time the MLA for Bayad, left the party before the 2017 legislative elections. At the party’s state office, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee President Jagdish Thakor welcomed Mahendrasinh Vaghela. Mahendrasinh Vaghela spoke to the media and said: “I want to oppose hateful politics. I never was comfortable in the BJP. Despite having joined the BJP, I haven’t taken part in any of the party’s functions, events, or programmes for the past five years. Now, I have joined the congress and will work for the party.”

At the state unit office, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee President Jagdish Thakor welcomed Mahendrasinh into the party.

He added that he had not put forward any requests and that neither had the Congress made any commitments, and that he would assume whatever task was given to him by the party.

Mahendrasinh Vaghela also asserted that because of his nearly 27 years of service to the Congress and party leaders, he will get along well with them once more.

Mahendrasinh had stood as a candidate for the Congress in the Gujarat Assembly elections from Bayad in 2012. But prior to the state’s 2017 Assembly elections, he left the party. Along with six other Congress lawmakers, his father left the party for reportedly casting a cross-vote in Favour of the BJP candidate during the Rajya Sabha elections.
Mahendrasinh joined the BJP in 2018 but left the party three months later. In his resignation letter he stated that he was leaving for “personal reasons.”
