On Friday, the Apex court issued a notice to the Union Government on a petition seeking direction to the centre to frame rules, regulations, and guidelines to effectively mitigate the problem of overpopulation. The petition was filed by Dandi Swami Jeetendranand Saraswatee of Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti on the ground that the natural resources available are limited but the population is constantly growing hence the environment won’t be able to sustain the needs of the mankind. It also raised a particular concern over significant factors that give rise to several serious problems which hinders the quality of life of millions of citizens. The plea also added as an alternative, a submission to direct the Law Commission of India to prepare a comprehensive report on population control measures within three months and submit the same to the respondents for due consideration. Currently, India’s population is approximately, 1.39 billion which constitutes about 18% of the entire population of the world.
