Salary earners submitted close to 34 lakh Income Tax Returns (ITR) up till 4 PM on the final day of the fiscal year 2012–2022, the Income Tax department stated on Sunday, according to news agency PTI. The I-T return filing deadline is this Sunday for taxpayers whose fiscal year ended on March 31, 2022, did not require an audit of their accounts. The report states that up till July 30, more than 5.10 crore tax returns had been submitted. The Income Tax Department tweeted, “33,73,975 ITRs have been filed up to 1600 hours today & 4,73,228 ITRs filed in the last hour,” providing figures on Income Tax Returns filed on Sunday.

To prevent the imposition of late fees, the I-T department has been nagging taxpayers over the course of the month to file their return for the fiscal year 2021–2022.

The department also advised taxpayers that they could contact the help desk at 1800 103 0025 or 1800 419 0025 for assistance with ITR filing or send an email to [email protected]

If they submit their ITR before December 31 of the assessment year, individuals with yearly incomes over Rs 5 lakh are subject to a Rs 5,000 late fine under the tax legislation.

Individuals with an annual income of less than Rs 5 lakh would be required to pay a late fee of Rs 1,000. Additionally, there will be an additional 1% interest charge per month for late filing for individuals who still owe money on taxes. Taxpayers whose income is below the taxable limit are exempt from the late fee.
