Football international Karim Benzema has announced his retirement. Despite having scored 37 goals in 97 appearances for France, Benzema’s time with the team hasn’t exactly been smooth since his debut 15 years ago. In March 2007, Benzema scored in his first game as a substitute for France against Austria.
“I’ve made my best efforts and my mistakes to be where I am today and I am proud! I’ve written my own story and our story ends today,” wrote Benzema
J’ai fait les efforts et les erreurs qu’il fallait pour être là où je suis aujourd’hui et j’en suis fier !
J’ai écrit mon histoire et la nôtre prend fin. #Nueve pic.twitter.com/7LYEzbpHEs— Karim Benzema (@Benzema) December 19, 2022

Argentina defeated France in the World Cup championship game on penalties (4-2). The next day, one of their best forward players (Karim Benzema) announced his retirement, adding to the sadness of French supporters. He was selected for France’s Euro 2008 team, but his performance was criticised after the team was eliminated early. Despite regularly participating in the qualification campaign, Benzema was not included in France’s World Cup lineup for 2010. He was a member of France’s squad once more for Euro 2020, where he finished with four goals and ended up being the third-highest scorer with four goals.
