After the scores were tied 3-3 in extra time, Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties, giving Lionel Messi his first FIFA World Cup victory and a stunning victory to his international football career. Messi scored two goals and Kylian Mbappe three for France. Argentina only had one additional scorer, Angel di Maria.
Messi, the all-time leading goal scorer for Argentina in World Cup history, broke numerous records in the record-breaking final. Seven goals were scored him during the FIFA World Cup 2022. The Golden Ball was given to the 35-year-old for being the best player at the Qatar-hosted FIFA World Cup in 2022. Messi is the only player to have won the Golden Ball twice, scoring 26 goals for Argentina in important international competitions (2014 and 2022).
