Railway Passenger charged ₹5 extra for water bottle; IRCTC contractor fined ₹1 lakh

The Ambala railway division on Friday fined a catering contractor 1 lakh for overcharging, a day after a train passenger complained that packaged drinking water was sold for Rupees 5 more than the MRP. According to representatives from the commercial branch of the division, the fine was imposed on M/s Chandra Mauli Mishra of Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, an authorised contractor with the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for train number 12231/32 (Lucknow-Chandigarh-Lucknow).

The train relies on on-board vendors who have been approved by IRCTC because it lacks a pantry car of its own. IRCTC gave Mishra the job on December 1 of this year. It was twice extended to conclude on December 17 in Lucknow during the final round trip of the train.
